Have you ever wanted the ability to write amazing lyrics for a song, but managed to write just one boring chorus? Maybe it's time to try writing poetry and then turn it into a song!
Steps

Step 1. Decide on the genre of music you want your song to be
Is it punk? Country? Jazz? Rap? Once you make up your mind, you can read some lyrics by a band or artist of that genre to get an idea of what you are going to do.

Step 2. Write a poem
You don't even have to think that you are trying to write a song. Base your poetry on something that has happened to you. Depending on the genre, you can decide if you want to describe an emotion, tell a story, or just write something. Or if you are writing a song as a gift, take some time to think about that person and the history you have together.

Step 3. Read the poem
Pick a particular phrase that has caught your eye. Turn that phrase into the chorus. Usually a chorus is easier to do than the other parts, if it gets your attention, it will have the same effect on other people.

Step 4. Decide where you want to break the music
Will it only have one chorus or four? Where are they going to go? Try reading your poem aloud and see where you can pause or breathe. These are usually good places to break up. Then put them on the chorus.

Step 5. Read your poem over and over again
Eliminate the parts that you think are too long or would not fit into a song.
Every song has a rhythm and if you have a very long line in your poetry and you try to squash it, this will not sound good. If you really like that line, try to think about how to say the same thing in a shorter way.

Step 6. Take the poem and put it into lyrics for a song
Warnings
- Not all poetry makes a great song! If yours doesn't turn out the way you want, rewrite it.
- Don't be discouraged or give up trying if you have problems at first! Everyone has to start somewhere.
- If you've never written poetry, it may take a while to get hooked on this. Try reading articles on how to be successful when it comes to writing poetry. This can give you an idea of what to look for in poetry.
- Try to choose a category of music that you are familiar with or your song will sound like a cheap knockoff.
