This article will teach you how to create a new, empty folder on a Windows computer and on a Mac.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Create a new folder on a Windows computer

Step 1. Go to the area where you want to create the folder
The simplest place is on your computer desktop, but you can create a folder anywhere on it.
- You can open File Explorer by clicking the Start menu
Windowsstart and typing "file explorer". Then click on the
File_Explorer_Icon File Browser at the top of the Start menu. From here you can select any folder you want to open from the left panel.

Step 2. Right click on a blank space
Doing so will open a drop-down menu. Make sure not to right-click on a file or folder, as this will open the wrong drop-down menu.
- If you are in a non-existent folder (for example, Documents), you can also click the tab Beginning which is at the top left of the File Explorer window and click New folder which is on the toolbar that appears.
- If you're using a computer that has a trackpad instead of a mouse, click the trackpad with two fingers to perform a right-click.

Step 3. New selection
This option is at the bottom of the drop-down menu and opens another pop-up menu.

Step 4. Click Folder
It's at the top of the pop-up menu.

Step 5. Type in a name for the folder and press ↵ Enter
This action will create the folder with the new name.
- The folder name cannot contain any punctuation or special characters.
- If you don't enter a name, the folder will be saved as "New Folder".
Method 2 of 2: Create a new folder on a Mac

Step 1. Go to the area where you want to create the folder
The Mac desktop is generally the easiest place to create a folder, but you can create a folder almost anywhere.

Step 2. Click File
This menu item is at the top left of the Mac screen.

Step 3. Click New Folder
This action will allow you to create a new folder in your current location.
You can also right-click on empty space using a mouse or click with two fingers on a computer with a trackpad. Make sure not to right-click on a file or folder, as this will open the wrong drop-down menu

Step 4. Type a name for the folder and press Backspace
This action will allow you to create a new folder with a new name.
