This wikiHow teaches you how to create a torrent file. Torrent files are basically links to specific uploaded files, like a video that you want to send to a friend.
Part 1 of 3: Install qBitTorrent
Step 1. Open the qBitTorrent website
Go to https://www.qbittorrent.org/download.php in your computer's web browser.
Although most torrent applications will allow you to create a torrent, qBitTorrent is the only ad-free torrent client available for Windows, Mac, and Linux
Step 2. Select a download link
Depending on your operating system, click one of the following options:
- Windows: click 64-bit installer (64-bit installer) which is to the right of the "Mirror link" heading in the Windows section.
- Mac: click DMG which is to the right of the "Mirror link" heading in the Mac section.
Step 3. Double click on the downloaded installation file
This will open the file.
Step 4. Install qBitTorrent
Depending on your computer's operating system, do the following:
- Windows: click Yes when prompted, and then follow the installation prompts on the screen.
- Mac: Drag the qBitTorrent application icon over the shortcut in the "Applications" folder, then follow the onscreen instructions. You may have to verify the download before qBitTorrent installs.
Part 2 of 3: Copy URLs from Trackers
Step 1. Open the list of torrent trackers
Go to http://www.torrenttrackerlist.com/torrent-tracker-list/ in your computer's web browser.
Step 2. Scroll down to the list of trackers
It will be found under the heading "Torrent Tracker List" near the top of the page.
Step 3. Select all the URLs from the list
Click and drag your mouse cursor over the first URL in the list and then drag down to start selecting available URLs. You can release the mouse button once you reach the bottom of the list.
There may be hundreds of URLs in this list, so you might spend a while scrolling and selecting
Step 4. Copy the URLs
Press Ctrl + C (Windows) or Command + C (Mac) to do so. At this point, you are ready to start creating your torrent.
Part 3 of 3: Create the torrent
Step 1. Open qBitTorrent
Click or double-click the qBitTorrent application icon, which looks like the letters "qb" on a blue background.
- You may have to click I agree before qBitTorrent opens.
Step 2. Click Tools
It's at the top of the qBitTorrent window (Windows) or the screen (Mac). A drop-down menu will appear.
Step 3. Click Create torrent
You will see this in the drop down menu. Doing so will open the Create torrent window.
Step 4. Click Select File
It's near the top of the page. A pop-up window will appear.
- If you want to torrent using an entire folder, click Select folder.
Step 5. Select the file you want to use
Go to the location of the file (or folder) you want to use, click once on the file or folder, and click To open or To select.
Step 6. Check the "Begin planting immediately" box
This will ensure that the torrent files are uploaded, which means that someone else will be able to download them.
Not seeding the torrent files will result in a dead torrent
Step 7. Enter the URLs of the trackers you copied
Click the "Tracker URLs" text box in the "Fields" section of the menu, and then press Ctrl + V (Windows) or Command + V (Mac) to paste the URLs that you copied before.
Many of the crawlers on this list will not work, which is why you are copying and pasting all of them into the URL text box instead of just selecting one
Step 8. Click Create torrent
It's at the bottom of the window. A pop-up window will appear.
Step 9. Select a save location
Click on the folder where you want to save the created torrent file.
Step 10. Click Save
It's at the bottom of the window. Doing so will save your file and start to seed the torrent, which means that the torrent is now available for download.
Step 11. Send the torrent to a friend
In order for someone to download the torrent files, they will simply need to double-click the torrent to open it in its default torrent application and then confirm the download location for the torrent files.
As long as you seed the torrent, your friend should be able to download the torrent without a problem
- If you want to install qBitTorrent on Linux, just type sudo apt-get install qbittorrent and enter your password when prompted.
- The more seeds a file has, the faster it will download.
