This wikiHow teaches you how to send a text message on the WhatsApp application. You can do this on both iPhone and Android. As long as the recipient has WhatsApp installed and has access to Wi-Fi, they can receive and reply to your text messages from anywhere in the world.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: On iPhone
Step 1. Open WhatsApp
Press the WhatsApp application icon, which is a green and white speech bubble with the outline of a phone.
Use the iPhone App Store to download WhatsApp if you don't have it
Step 2. Press CHATS
This tab is at the top of the screen. Doing so will open the Chats page, where you can see your current conversations.
- If WhatsApp opens a chat, press < in the upper left corner of the screen to return to the Chats page.
Step 3. Press the "New Chat" icon
This icon looks like a pencil on a sheet of paper. It's in the upper-right corner of the screen.
You can also open an existing chat by tapping it. If you do this, skip the next step
Step 4. Tap the name of the contact
Doing this will open a new chat with that contact.
- You can also press Create group at the top of the page to create a new group, or you can click New contact to add the phone number of a contact.
Step 5. Write your text message
Write your message in a text field at the bottom of the screen.
You can also upload a photo by clicking on the camera icon and selecting the photo from your iPhone's roll of images
Step 6. Click the "Submit" arrow
It looks like a blue paper airplane to the right of the text field. The message will be sent.
Method 2 of 2: On Android
Step 1. Open WhatsApp
Press the WhatsApp application icon, which is a green and white speech bubble with the outline of a phone.
Use the Android Play Store to download WhatsApp if you don't have it yet
Step 2. Press CHATS
This tab is at the top of the screen. Doing so will open the Chats page.
If WhatsApp opens in a conversation, press the "Back" button at the top left of the screen to return to the Chats page
Step 3. Press the "New Chat" icon
The icon is a speech bubble in the upper right corner of the screen, to the left of the icon ⋮
- On some Android smartphones and tablets, the "New Chat" icon is in the lower right corner of the screen.
- You can also select an existing chat by clicking on it. If you do this, skip the next step.
Step 4. Select a contact
Tap on the contact's name to open a new chat with that person.
You can also press "New group" near the top of the page to start a chat with a new group or press the silhouette icon of a person near the top right of the screen to add a new contact
Step 5. Write a text message
Write your message in the text field at the bottom of the screen.
You can add a photo by tapping the camera icon to the right of the text field and selecting a photo from the Android Image Roll
Step 6. Click the "Submit" arrow
It's an icon in the shape of a paper plane on a green background. This will send a text message to the contact.
