Resetting the router password will allow you to log into it and make changes to settings and preferences when necessary. The only way to reset the router password is to return it to its factory settings, something that can usually be done by pressing the reset button on the router itself.
Steps
Method 1 of 5: Netgear

Step 1. Power on the Netgear router and wait about a minute for the router to start up

Step 2. Find the "Restore Factory Settings" button on the router, which is circled in red and labeled as such

Step 3. Press and hold the "Restore Factory Settings" button for approximately seven seconds using a small, thin object such as the end of a paper clip or pen

Step 4. Release the button when the "Power" light begins to flash and allow the router to fully reboot
The router password is reset when the "Power" light stops flashing and turns solid green or white. The default password of the router is "password".
Method 2 of 5: Linksys

Step 1. Find the reset button on the Linksys router
This button is small and circular and is usually found on the back of the router labeled as such in red ink.

Step 2. Check that the router is turned on and press and hold the reset button for at least 10 seconds
The "Power" LED light will blink as long as you press and hold the reset button.
Older routers may have to press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds

Step 3. Disconnect and reconnect the router to the power source when the reset is complete

Step 4. Wait for the "Power" LED to stay solid, which usually takes about a minute after reconnecting the router to the power source
The router password will have been reset and you should leave the default password blank when you log into the router.
Method 3 of 5: Belkin

Step 1. Find the "Reset" button on the Belkin router
This button is small and circular and is usually found on the back of the router labeled as such.

Step 2. Check that the router is turned on and press and hold the reset button for at least 15 seconds

Step 3. Wait at least one minute for the router to reboot
The Belkin router will have been restored to its factory settings and you will need to leave the default password blank when you log into the router.
Method 4 of 5: D-Link

Step 1. Check that the D-Link router is connected

Step 2. Press and hold the reset button for approximately 10 seconds using a small, thin object such as the end of a paper clip or pen

Step 3. Release the reset button after 10 seconds and wait for the router to fully reboot

Step 4. Wait at least 15 seconds after the router reboots before logging in to it
The router password will have been reset and you should leave the default password blank when you log into the router.
Method 5 of 5: All other brands

Step 1. Check that the router is connected

Step 2. Examine the router for the "Reset" button
In most cases, this button is labeled as such, but if it isn't, look for a small button or one that sits in a hole that can only be pressed with the end of an office paper clip or pen.

Step 3. Press and hold the reset button for 10-15 seconds
This will return the router to its factory settings and reset it during the process.

Step 4. Log in to the router using the default username and password
In most cases this is either blank or "admin" or "password".
- Contact the router manufacturer directly to obtain the default password in case you have problems logging into the router.
