This wikiHow teaches you how to buy an iPhone ringtone from the iTunes Store, as well as how to create a ringtone from scratch. After buying or uploading a ringtone, you can add it to your iPhone.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Buy Ringtones

Step 1. Open the iTunes Store
Tap the "iTunes Store" application icon, which will look like a white star on a magenta background.

Step 2. Click on More
It will be the button in the lower right corner of the screen.

Step 3. Click on Tones
You'll find this option at the top of the "More" page.

Step 4. Find the ringtone you want to buy
You can do this by scrolling down through the "Featured" page, or you can click on the tab Search at the bottom of the screen and write the name of a specific artist, song, or movie.

Step 5. Click on the price next to each ringtone
If you searched for a specific element, first click on the tab Ringtones located near the top of the screen.
If you don't have a payment method set up with Apple Pay, then set one up before proceeding

Step 6. Click on Done when prompted
This button will appear at the bottom of the menu New tone. If, instead, you prefer to apply the ringtone to a specific person or function, you can also click on one of the following options:
- Set as default ringtone. This will set the ringtone as your new default ringtone for incoming calls and FaceTime calls.
- Set as default text message tone. This will set the selected tone as the default alert for all incoming text messages.
- Assign to contact. This will bring up the contact list so that you can choose a contact on which to apply the selected ringtone.

Step 7. Enter your Touch ID, or your Apple ID password
When prompted, scan your finger, or type in your Apple ID password. When you do this, the ringtone will start downloading.

Step 8. Wait for the ringtone to finish downloading
Once this happens, it will appear in the ringtones list on your iPhone.
- Opens Setting, scroll down and tap on Sounds and touch (or Sounds), and finally click on Ringtones to display the ringtone.
Method 2 of 3: Create Ringtones in iTunes

Step 1. Open iTunes
Click or double-click on the app icon, which will look like a white icon with a multi-colored music note on the front.
- If you don't have iTunes installed on your computer, then download and install it first before continuing.
- If you get a window asking if you want to update iTunes, click Download iTunes and wait for the update to finish. You will have to restart your computer after iTunes finishes updating.

Step 2. Find the song you want to use
Scroll through your music library until you find the song you want to turn into a ringtone.

Step 3. Play the song
Listen to the section of the song that you want to make a ringtone, noting the start and end times of that section.
The ringtone cannot be longer than 30 seconds

Step 4. Select the song
Click on the song once to select it.

Step 5. Click Edit
You will find it in the upper left area of the window. A drop-down menu will appear.

Step 6. Click on Song Information
This will be found in the drop down menus Edit or File. Doing this will open a new window.

Step 7. Click the Options tab
You will find it at the top of the new window.

Step 8. Check the "start" box as well as the "end" box
You will find both in the middle area of the tab Choices.

Step 9. Change the start times and final.
In the frame beginning, write the time you want the ringtone to start, and then write the time you want it to end, in the text box final.
- The selection you make cannot be longer than 30 seconds, so make sure that the time between the box beginning and the picture final, do not exceed 30 seconds.

Step 10. Click OK
It will be at the bottom of the window.

Step 11. Select the song
If the song is not selected for some reason, click on it again to select it.

Step 12. Click File, then select Turn into.
You will find this option in the middle of the menu File. A pop-up menu will appear.

Step 13. Click Create AAC Version
It will be found in the pop-up menu Turn into. Doing this will create a copy of the song, which will be the duration allotted in the beats. beginning and final. If you can't see the option Create AAC version, then do the following first:
- Click on Edit (Windows), or iTunes (Mac).
- Click on Preferences….
- Click on Import configuration ….
- Click the "Import using" drop-down box, and then click AAC encoder.
- Click on To accept twice.

Step 14. Select the ringtone version of the song
Click once on the tone file (that is, the shorter version of the song) to select it.

Step 15. Open the folder location where the ringtone is located
Click the AAC version of the song, click File, and then click Show in Windows Explorer (Windows), or Show in Finder (Mac). Doing so will open the folder where the ringtone was saved.

Step 16. Change the ringtone extension to M4R
At this point, the ringtone will be saved as an M4A file, which is not compatible with iPhone ringtones. You can change this file and turn it into a real ringtone file, if you do the following:
- Windows. Enable the extension view by clicking View, at the top of the "File Explorer", and then checking the Filename extensions box. Right click on the tone file, click Rename, then replace.m4a with.m4r (for example, a file named yeet.m4a should be converted to yeet.m4r). Press the ↵ Enter key, and then click To accept, when requested.
- Mac. Click once on the file to select it, then click it again to edit its name. Select the.m4a section of the file, then replace it with.m4r (for example, a file named yeet.m4a will need to be converted to yeet.m4r). Press the ⏎ Return key, and then click Use.m4r when prompted.

Step 17. Add the ringtone to your iPhone
To add the ringtone to your iPhone, you will need to open iTunes, connect your iPhone to the computer via USB cable, and then copy and paste the ringtone into the "Tones" heading below your iPhone's name (en You may need to click on your iPhone's name first to make this option appear.)
Method 3 of 3: Create Ringtones in GarageBand

Step 1. Open Garageband on your iPhone
Tap the GarageBand app icon, which will look like an electric guitar on an orange background.
If you don't have GarageBand installed, you can download it from the App Store for free

Step 2. Click on +
You will find it in the upper right corner of the screen.
- If GarageBand opens a certain project, then first hit the "Back" button in the upper left corner of the screen.
- If you see a list of folders and no symbols + in the upper right corner, click on Recent in the lower left corner of the screen, before clicking on +.

Step 3. Select AUDIO RECORDER
Swipe left or right until you find this option, then click on it to open a new “Audio Recorder” project.

Step 4. Click on the soundbar icon
You will find this stack of vertical bars on the upper left side of the screen. A horizontal bar will appear on the screen, this bar will represent a new audio track.

Step 5. Click on +
You will find it in the upper right corner of the screen.
- This button will be different from the big icon + located in the lower left corner of the screen.

Step 6. Click on Section A
You will find this in the middle of the screen. This action will open the track settings.

Step 7. Change the "Manual" option from "8" to "30"
You can do this by clicking on the upward pointing arrow above the "8" until the text box reads "30".
This will ensure that your track is no longer than 30 seconds

Step 8. Click on Done
You will find it in the upper right corner of the screen.

Step 9. Click on the "Loop" icon
This looped icon will be in the upper right side of the screen. A new menu will appear.

Step 10. Click on the Music tab
You will find it in the upper right corner of the menu.

Step 11. Click and drag the song you want to use onto the timeline
Click on the header songs, then tap and drag the song you want to use towards the bottom of the screen and drop it there.
The song should be saved in your iPhone storage, and not just in your iCloud library

Step 12. Select the portion of the song you want to use
Drag the left hand bar to the right or left to the point where you want the song to start, and then do the same to select the point where you want the song to end.

Step 13. Move the song to the beginning of the track
Tap and drag the song to the left until the far left of the song matches the left side of the screen.

Step 14. Click on the icon

You will find it in the upper left corner of the screen. A drop-down menu will appear.

Step 15. Click on My songs
You will find this option in the drop-down menu. Doing this will save the song as a new project in the tab Recent.

Step 16. Click on the song for a long time
Press and hold your finger on the song for at least one second, then release. This will bring up a menu above the song.

Step 17. Click on Share
You will find it on the menu. The "Share" menu will open.

Step 18. Click on Ringtone
This will be a bell-shaped icon and will be located in the middle of the screen.
- If a message appears warning you that the song must be shortened, click on Continue in the message, before proceeding.

Step 19. Rename the song
Click on the "TONE NAME" text box at the top of the screen, then replace "My song" with the name you want to assign to the ringtone.

Step 20. Click on Export
You will find it in the upper right corner of the screen. Your iPhone will add the ringtone to the ringtone library.
This may take a few minutes

Step 21. Set the ringtone
After adding the ringtone to your iPhone, you can select it as the ringtone in the section Ringtone from the menu Sounds and touch (or Sounds) in "Settings".
Advice
- If you bought a ringtone and then deleted it from your iPhone, you can find it if you open the iTunes Store application, click on Plus, click on Bought, and click on Tones.
