In this wikiHow guide, you will learn how to insert the statistical symbol X bar into a Microsoft Word document.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Use Windows

Step 1. Open Microsoft Word
You will find it in the Microsoft Office area of the Start menu.

Step 2. Click Insert
It's at the top of the screen.

Step 3. Click Equation
It's the icon with the pi symbol at the top right of the toolbar.

Step 4. Write x in the equation box

Step 5. Select the "x" from the equation box
Click on the "x" and drag the mouse cursor to select it.

Step 6. Click Emphasis
It's in the toolbar at the top right of the screen. Its icon is a lowercase letter "a" with an umlaut. Pressing it will open a menu with accent symbols.

Step 7. Scroll down and click on the first box under "Overlapping and Underlying Bars."
The icon is a square with a bar above it. When selected, a bar will be inserted above the "x", creating an "x bar".
Method 2 of 2: Use macOS

Step 1. Open Word
It's the blue icon with a white "W". Typically found in the Dock or in the "Applications" menu.

Step 2. Write an x where you want to insert the x bar
You can write it anywhere in the document.

Step 3. Press Ctrl + Command + Space
Doing so will open the "Character Viewer".

Step 4. Type combining overline in the search box
It's at the top of the character viewer. A solid black line will appear just below the search bar. That line is known as "combining overline".

Step 5. Click on the top merge line
The "x" you typed will now appear as an x slash.
