This wikiHow teaches you how to install Steam skins or themes on Windows and macOS.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Windows

Step 1. Find skins to download
You can find many free Steam skins online. A popular site to download them is

Step 2. Download the skin on your computer
Skins are usually compressed in. Zip or. Rar files.
- Depending on your browser, you may have to select a download location. Select folder downloads and click Keep.

Step 3. Right click on the file you downloaded
You may have to open the folder downloads if it is not already open. A context menu will appear.

Step 4. Click Extract All…

Step 5. Select the folder with the Steam skins
This is usually C: / Program Files (x86) / Steam / skins. If you installed Steam in a different directory, click the button To explore… and select the folder "skins" in that directory now.

Step 6. Click Extract
The files will be extracted into the skins folder.

Step 7. Open Steam
You will usually find it under All applications in the Start menu. If you are prompted to log in or enter a Steam Guard code, follow the onscreen instructions to do so.

Step 8. Click on the Steam menu
It's in the upper left corner of Steam.

Step 9. Click Settings
It's near the bottom of the menu.

Step 10. Click Interface
It's in the left column.

Step 11. Click the down arrow next to “default skin”
It's near the center of the right panel.

Step 12. Select the new skin
All the skins that you have extracted from the skin folder will appear in this drop-down menu.

Step 13. Click OK
A confirmation message will appear in the middle of the screen, asking you to restart the application.

Step 14. Click RESET STEAM
The applications will shut down and restart with the new skin applied.
Method 2 of 2: macOS

Step 1. Find skins to download
You can find many free Steam skins online. A popular site to download them is

Step 3. Double click on the file you downloaded
You should find it in the folder downloads. This will extract a new folder containing the files with the skins.

Step 4. Open the Finder window
You can do this by clicking on the two-tone Mac logo in the Dock.

Step 5. Press ⌘ Cmd + Shift + G
A dialog box will appear.

Step 6. Type ~ / Library / Application Support / Steam / Steam. AppBundle / Steam / Contents / MacOS / skins and press the Return key
This will open the skins folder.

Step 7. Drag the extracted folder to the skins folder in the Finder
Now that the skin files are in place, you can easily change the skin in the Steam app.

Step 8. Open Steam
It is located in the folder Applications and on the Launchpad. If you are prompted to log in or enter a Steam Guard code, follow the onscreen instructions to do so.

Step 9. Click on the Steam menu
