This wikiHow teaches you how to play a WhatsApp OPUS file on Windows or macOS. The easiest way to do it is to install the VLC Player application that supports these types of files and many other audio formats.

Method 1 of 2: Open an OPUS File in Windows

Step 1. Install the VLC Player application for Windows
It is a very popular free application that supports a wide variety of audio and video formats.
- Login to https://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html from a browser.
- Click on Download VLC and wait for the download to start.
- If prompted, click Save File or Download to save the installer.
- Run the installer by double-clicking the downloaded file. You may need to click Yes or Let to start the process.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to install the application.

Step 2. Press the ⊞ Win + E keys to open the file explorer
A list of the files and drives on your computer will appear.

Step 3. Open the folder that contains the OPUS file
Its extension is.opus.

Step 4. Right click on the file
A context menu will expand.

Step 5. Click Play with VLC media player
It's near the top of the menu. This will open the file in VLC and you can listen to it.
- If you don't see this option, click To open with and select VLC Media Player.
Method 2 of 2: Open an OPUS file on macOS

Step 1. Install the VLC Player application for macOS
It is a very popular free application that supports a wide variety of audio and video formats.
- Login to https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html from a browser.
- Click the orange button Download VLC. The download will start automatically.
- If prompted, save the file to a folder on your computer.
- Double-click on the file you downloaded (the name begins with "vlc" and ends with ".dmg."). Icons will appear within a window.
- Drag the icon VLC which is shaped like an orange cone to the folder icon Applications to install the VLC Player.

Step 2. Open the folder that contains the OPUS file
To do so, click on the search icon

on the platform and look inside the folder.

Step 3. Open the VLC Player application on your Mac
It is located in the folder Applications.

Step 4. Drag the OPUS file to the VLC Player
This will automatically import the file into VLC and start playing immediately.
