This wikiHow teaches you how to use Plex on an iPhone or iPad. Plex allows you to stream multimedia content from one device to another. To use this application, you must first install it on a computer that contains all the media files you want to stream. Once it is installed, you will be able to transmit all the multimedia content of the computer to any device, including the iPhone or the iPad.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Install Plex Media Server
Step 1. Go to https://www.plex.tv/downloads using a web browser
Using your preferred web browser, go to the official Plex website so you can download Plex Media Server on your computer.
Step 2. Click Download
It's the yellow button on the left of the page. This action will open a new option at the bottom of the page.
Step 3. Click Download
It's at the bottom of the page. This action will start the download of Plex Media Server on the computer.
Make sure the website has detected the correct operating system before you start the download
Step 4. Double click on the Plex Media Server installation file
By default, you can find downloaded files in the "Downloads" folder.
On a Mac, the download will be a ZIP file. Double click on the ZIP file to extract the files to a new folder
Step 5. Install Plex Media Server
In Windows, click Install and let the program install on the computer.
On a Mac, drag the Plex Media Server application to the Applications folder
Step 6. Open the Plex Media Server application
In Windows, after the installation is finished, you can click Run to run the server. This action will open Plex Media Server in a web browser.
Step 7. Select a login method to create an account
You can create a Plex account using a Google or Facebook account, or you can sign up with an email address.
Make sure to log in using the same method on all devices. If you create a Plex account with a Google account, be sure to log into Plex using an iPhone or iPad with the same account
Step 8. Select a Plex option
You can click "Activate" to pay a small fee and activate the application, or "Subscribe to Plex Pass" to subscribe to Plex Pass and get additional benefits. If you want to continue with the trial mode, click "Skip for now." There will be limited playback and a watermark on images while Plex is in trial mode.
Step 9. Click Add Library
It's in the middle of the dashboard page. This action will open a pop-up menu.
Step 10. Select a media file type
Choose movies, TV shows, music, photos, or other videos.
Step 11. Click Add Folders
It's in the left column in the "Edit" menu.
Step 12. Click Browse Media Folder
It's below the list of folders in the library. This action will open a box that will allow you to search for folders on the computer. Plex Media Server will try to scan and add folders automatically.
Step 13. Select a folder that contains the media files
Go to a folder that contains media files. If you add videos to the "Movie" library, go to a folder that contains videos. Do the same for music and photos.
Step 14. Click Add
It's the orange button in the lower right of the browser box. Add as many folders as you like.
Part 2 of 2: Stream Plex on iPhone or iPad
Step 1. Open the App Store
It's the blue app with a white "A". This is where you download and install new apps.
Step 2. Click the Search tab
It's located in the lower-right corner, next to the hourglass icon.
Step 3. Type plex in the search bar
Press the gray search bar at the top and type plex on the keyboard that appears on the screen. Then press the Look for to search.
Step 4. Click GET next to Plex
The Plex app has a black icon with a yellow arrow pointing to the right.
Step 5. Enter your Touch ID or passcode
When prompted, use your Touch ID or device passcode to download and install the Plex app.
If you don't have any security on your phone, press "Install" to start the installation
Step 6. Press OPEN
This button will appear when the application is installed. This action will launch the Plex application.
Step 7. Press a login method to access
If you already have a Plex account, choose the method you used to create the Plex account when you installed the application on your computer.
If this is your first time using Plex on your iPhone or iPad, you can press "Next" to see the introduction or you can press "Skip the introduction" to go to the main page
Step 8. Press the device menu in the upper left
This is in the upper left corner and has the name of the iPhone or iPad.
Step 9. Tap the device you want to stream from
If you want to watch videos on your computer, tap the computer name or the name you gave the application when you installed it on your computer.
Step 10. Click Search
It's the second tab at the bottom.
Step 11. Tap a category
You can choose Movies, Music, Photos, Channels or Playlists.
Step 12. Click Search again
This action will allow you to search all files and folders in the media file library.
Step 13. Press the media file you want to stream
This will start streaming on the iPhone or iPad.
