The MLA (Modern Language Association of America) Manual of Style is one of the most widely used for academic and professional writing. When writing an essay using the MLA format, keep the following stylistic rules in mind.

Step 1. Do not include a separate cover page unless specifically requested

By standard MLA rules, it is not necessary to add a separate cover sheet for most tests.

Step 2. Center the title

The title must be centered and written at the height of one third of the page.

  • The title should be informative and creative at the same time.
  • If you include a subtitle, you must write it on the same line as the title, separated by a colon.
  • The first letter of all keywords must be capitalized. The words "from", "and" or "to" should not be capitalized, unless they are the first words of the title or subtitle.

Step 3. Include your full name

Centered, in the middle of the page you must include your full name preceded by the word "by".

  • Type "by" on one line, and press "Enter" on the keyboard to type your full name on the next line.
  • The format to write your name is: "Name - Surname".

Step 4. Finish by writing the subject, the name of your teacher, and the due date

At two-thirds of the page you should include this essential information about the essay.

  • Write the subject and the section number on one line.
  • On the line that comes immediately after, write the name of the teacher or tutor.
  • On the final line, write the delivery date in the format: "Month (in letters), day (in numbers), year (in numbers)."

Step 1. Create 2.5 cm margins

The upper, lower, left and right margins should be 2.5 cm.

In most word processors you can change the margins in the "Page Layout" settings, usually under the "Start" menu. There should be an option in the dialog called "Margins". In that place you can change each margin to the appropriate size

Step 2. Write in double space

From the first page, your entire essay should be double-spaced. Remember that you should not include any extra space after each paragraph.

In most word processors you can change the spacing in the "Page Layout" settings, usually under the "Start" menu. There should be an option in the dialog called "Spacing". In that place you can select the double spacing "2.0"

Step 3. Write in font size 12

The standard font for essays is Times New Roman, size 12.

If you prefer to use a font other than Times New Roman, choose one that is simple, easy to read, and not so large

Step 4. Create a header

Create a header that will appear in the same place on all pages. It should include your last name and page number, and it should be located in the upper right hand corner of the page.

In the "Insert" option of your word processor, select "Header" and write your name. Then select "Page Number" to automatically add the page number

Step 1. Write a title, as a heading, in the upper left corner, containing all the information that you would put on a cover:

your full name, the name of your teacher or tutor, the name of the subject and the delivery date.

  • Write your full name (in the format “First Name - Last Name”) on the first line.
  • On the second line, write the title and name of your teacher or tutor.
  • On the third line, write the name of the subject.
  • Include the delivery date on the last line, in the format “day / month / year (numeric)”.

Step 2. Center the title

On the line immediately after the due date, write the title of your essay. The title should be centered.

  • Do not write the title in larger type, or in italics, bold, or underlined.
  • The title should be informative and creative at the same time.
  • If you include a subtitle, you must write it on the same line as the title, separated by a colon.
  • The first letter of all keywords must be capitalized. The words "from", "and" or "to" should not be capitalized, unless they are the first words of the title or subtitle.

Step 3. Write the body of your essay

On the line after the title, align the cursor to the left and start writing the introductory paragraph of your essay.

Step 1. Write with indentation

The first line of each paragraph should have an indentation of 1.25 cm.

  • Make the indent with the "Tab" key on the keyboard.
  • You should not separate paragraphs with extra spaces. The indentation is sufficient to mark the beginning of a new paragraph.

Step 2. Separate the body of the text into sections where appropriate

If your essay is too long, your tutor may ask you to divide it into small sections, with appropriate subtitles for each part.

  • The MLA style recommends Arabic numerals and a period for subtitles. Leave a space after the period, and start writing the subtitle.
  • The first letter of each word in the subtitle must be capitalized.
  • Captions should be centered and on a separate line.

Step 3. Number the references if you include images or tables

When you include a table or figure in your essay, center the figure and assign it a number, a label, and the source from which you extracted it.

  • Use "Fig. 1," "Fig. 2," etc. for images, and "Table 1", "Table 2" for graphs and tables.
  • Label the figures simply: "illustration", "statistical table".
  • You must include the name of the creator of the figure, the source from which you extracted it, the publication date and the page number.
  • All this information should be included in a single line below the figure.

Step 1. Include parenthetical citations for all material you borrow

Whenever you include a direct quote or a paraphrase, you should put the source of that quote in parentheses after submitting it.

  • When the information is available, include the author's last name and the page number from which you extracted the citation.
  • When you've pulled the citation from a website and you don't have page numbers, just include the author's name.
  • If the author's name is not available, include a shortened version of the source title.
  • Note that if you've already included the author's name in the sentence, you don't need to repeat it in parentheses.

Step 2. Format the appointments

Most of the citations will be contained within the text, on the same line, that is, you do not need to give it a special format and you must treat them as normal text.

  • Always include the quote as part of a sentence. Never write "hanging quotes", that is, quotes that you have not previously entered.
  • Commas and periods must be respected in the quotation in parentheses. The parentheses must follow the quotation marks that introduce the quotation.

Step 3. Format long citations

Quotes that exceed three lines must be separated from the rest of the text.

  • After the last word before the appointment, press "Enter" on the keyboard to start a new line.
  • Each line of the long quote should have an indentation of 1.25 cm.
  • Long quotes should not be enclosed in quotation marks, but the corresponding information should be enclosed in parentheses.

If you have included notes in your text, they should be included on a separate sheet at the end of the document. Do not include them as footnotes, which are the notes that appear at the bottom of each page as they appear

In word processors, the numbering of the notes is usually automatic.

  • If this is not the case, make sure that each note has the Arabic number that corresponds to the number that has the reference in the body of the text.
  • The first line of each note should have an indentation of 1.25 cm.

Step 3. Include only brief and important information in your notes

Notes are used to discuss information that does not fit coherently with the narrative thread, but is nonetheless related to the information in the paragraph.

The notes should not exceed three or four lines. Avoid long discussions. Notes are not the place to present new points of view

  • The "Cited Bibliography" page should include all the works you've mentioned in the body of the text.

If any of the cited works does not have an author, sort it in alphabetical order taking the first word of the title of the article or book

Step 3. Cite a book

The basic format for citing a book is: author's last name, book title, information about the book's publication and publication support.

  • The author's name is written in the format: "Surname - Name", followed by a period.
  • The title of the book is written in italics, and each word in the title must be capitalized. Then write a period.
  • Write the city of publication of the book, followed by a colon, and include the publisher. After the publisher put a comma, and the year of publication. Then write a period.

The citation of journalistic articles includes the name of the author, the title of the article, the name of the newspaper or magazine where it was published, information related to this medium, and publication support.

  • The author's name is written in the format: "Surname - Name", followed by a period.
  • The title of the article is written in quotation marks, and each word must be capitalized. Then write a period.
  • The name of the newspaper or magazine must be in italics, and each word in capital letters. Then write a period.
  • Write the publication number, and the publication year in parentheses. Then write a comma and the page number, followed by a period.
