A short story can be a good source for a literature essay or an assignment for a language class. If you want to cite a short story, you will have to include a quote within the text, which will be in the form of "(O'Connor 10)" and then make a reference on the cited references page, which will have the following structure: "O ' Connor, Flannery. 'A Good Man is Hard to Find'. Flannery O'Connor's Short Story Collection. New York: FSG, 2000. 255-356. Printed ".
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Write in-text citations

Step 1. Put quotation marks around the short phrases in the text
If you use the content of a short story that is 3 lines or less, you can quote it within the text in quotation marks. This way, the reader will know that you are making a verbatim quote from the story.
For example, you can write the following: “In the short story 'A good man is hard to find', the character of the Unbalanced indicates' I understood that the crime does not matter. You can do one thing or another, kill a man or take a wheel off his car, because sooner or later you forget what you have done and they just punish you for it. '

Step 2. Use a block quote for a verbatim quote that is longer than 4 lines
If you are going to transcribe very long lines of the story word for word, insert them as a block quote so that they stand out on the page. When using these types of quotes, you don't have to use quotation marks.
- For example, you could write the following: “O'Connor describes the moment after the shooting with brutality and simplicity:
"She was a charlatan," said Bobby Lee, and he descended into the ditch, humming.
"She would have been a good woman - said the Unbalanced - if she had had someone close to shoot her every minute of her life."
"What fun!" - said Bobby Lee.
"Shut up, Bobby Lee," said the Unbalanced. There is no real pleasure in life. '

Step 3. Put the in-text citation in parentheses at the end of the citation
The in-text citation is always in parentheses, at the end of the cited text. Put a period or a comma after the quote, not before it.
- For example, write the following: “In the short story‘A good man is hard to find’the character of the Unbalanced indicates‘I understood that crime does not matter. You can do one thing or another, kill a man or take a wheel off his car, because sooner or later you forget what you have done and they simply punish you for it (O'Connor 10)”.
- Or you could write this: “O'Connor describes the moment after the shooting with brutality and simplicity:
"She was a charlatan," said Bobby Lee, and he descended into the ditch, humming.
"She would have been a good woman - said the Unbalanced - if she had had someone close to shoot her every minute of her life."
"What fun!" Said Bobby Lee.
"Shut up, Bobby Lee," said the Unbalanced. There is no real pleasure in life '(O'Connor 23) ".

Step 4. Include the author's last name and page number in the citation
Put a space and not a comma between the author's name and the page number. If there are multiple authors, separate their last names with a comma.
For example, you could write the quote in these two ways: "(O'Connor 23)" or "(Gaitskill 12)"
Method 2 of 2: Create a citation for the cited references page

Step 1. Begin the citation with the author's last name and first name
Indicate the author of the short story in the quote and place a comma between his last name and his first name. If there are several authors, use "and" to separate their names.
For example, you could write "O'Connor, Flannery" or "Erdrich, Louise and Diaz, Junot."

Step 2. Include the title of the short story in quotation marks
For example, write "O'Connor, Flannery. 'A good man is hard to find'" or "Erdrich, Louise. 'The flower'".

Step 3. Write in the title of the collection or anthology in italics
If you found the story online, you won't have to include either one.
For example: “O'Connor, Flannery. "A good man is hard to find." Flannery O'Connor's collection of short stories. "Or" Erdrich, Louise. 'The flower'. The best American stories of 2016”

Step 4. Write the name of the publisher if there is one
Put." and then indicates the publisher of the anthology if named. You don't have to include the publisher's name if the work is from a collection of short stories.
For example, you could write “Erdrich, Louise. 'The flower'. "The Best American Short Stories of 2016 Ed. By Junot Diaz."

Step 5. Include the location and name of the publisher, as well as the year the book was published
The location of the publisher is indicated with the city. If you cannot find this information for a story that you have collected on the Internet, it will not be necessary to include it.
For example, write the following: “O'Connor, Flannery. "A good man is hard to find." Flannery O'Connor's collection of short stories. New York: FSG, 2000”. Another option is to write, “Erdrich, Louise. 'The flower'. The Best American Short Stories of 2016, Ed. By Junot Diaz, New York: Harper Collins, 2016”

Step 6. Include the name of the web page in italics if you found the short story on the Internet
Put the name of the page inside the citation so the reader knows where to find the story online. You don't have to include the URL of the page.
For example, you can write “Gaitskill, Mary. "Something better than this." Fictionaut '"

Step 7. Cite the page numbers of the story if it is not from the Internet
Look at the page numbers of the short story in the source text. If you're citing it from a web page, you don't have to include the numbers.
For example, you can write “Erdrich, Louise. 'The flower'. The Best American Short Stories of 2016, Ed. By Junot Diaz, New York: Harper Collins, 2016. 324-414”

Step 8. Check the format of the short story
If it's from a printed book, use "Printed." If you found it on a web page, write "Web" and indicate the date you accessed it.
- For example, write the following “O’Connor, Flannery. "A good man is hard to find." Flannery O'Connor's collection of short stories. New York: FSG, 2000. 255-356. Printed".
- Otherwise, write it like this: “Gaitskill, Mary. "Something better than this." Fictionaut. Web. December 12, 2017.”.
