If you're looking for a fun card game to play with your friends, give UNO a try. Each player starts with a 7-card UNO hand. To play, match one of your cards with the card that has been dealt. The first player to get rid of all his cards wins the round. Then all the players tally up their scores. The game continues until one person accumulates 500 points. Once you've mastered UNO, try variations to change things up a bit.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Start the game

Step 1. Shuffle the cards and deal 7 cards for each player

Take out a pack of UNO cards and shuffle the 108 cards. Then, deal 7 cards for each person who wants to play. Instruct the players to keep their cards face down.

You can play UNO with 2 to 10 players. Players must be at least 7 years old

Step 2. Place the rest of the cards in the center of the table

Keep the cards face down in a pile. These cards will be the ones that players must draw during the game.

Step 3. Flip the top card of the draw pile to start the game

Place the top card of the draw pile next to it, but leave it face up. You will use this card to start the game and it will transform into the discard pile.

Step 4. Play with a card that matches the color, number, or symbol of the card on the table

The player to the dealer's left must throw a card from his hand if any match the color, number, word or symbol of the face-up card in the center of the table. Instruct him to place his card on the discard pile. Then the next player must find a card from his hand that he can play with.

  • For example, if the top card of the discard pile is a red number 8, you can play with any red card you have or a card of any color that has a number 8.
  • The game is generally played in a counterclockwise direction, starting from the dealer.

Tip:

If the player has a Wild card, they can use it at any time.

Step 5. Draw a card from the pile if you don't have any cards to play

If it's your turn and you don't have a card that matches the color, number, or symbol of the card above, take a card from the draw pile and add it to your hand. You can play this card immediately if it matches the table card in any way.

If you can't play the card you just drew, the player after you can continue their turn

Step 6. Pay attention to action cards and jokers

In addition to the basic UNO cards that have numbers, there are 3 types of action cards. If you play with a Color Change Wild card, you can choose the color for the next play. If you place a Take 2 card, the player after you must take 2 cards and pass their turn. If you play with the Return card, you change the direction of play, so the person who played before you will have another turn.

  • A Return card has two arrows going in opposite directions.
  • If you get an Intermission card, which has a circle with a slash on it, the player after you will lose their turn.

Did you know…?

You can play a Take 4 Wild card as if it were a Color Change Wild card, but have the next player draw 4 cards and pass their turn.

Step 7. Say "Uno" if you only have 1 card left

Keep playing until one player is left with only one card. At this point, the player must say "One", otherwise he will be penalized if another player notices.

If someone forgets to say "Uno", give them 2 cards as a penalty. If no one notices that the player has not said "One", there is no penalty

Step 8. Play the last card to win the round

Once you have only one card left (and you've already said "One"), wait until the game continues and reaches you. If you can play with the last card, you will be the winner of the round.

  • If you can't play the last card, draw another and continue until someone's hand is empty.
  • Try to save a Wild card for last, if you have one. That way, you know that you can play it and win the round.

Step 9. Count the points on each player's hands at the end of the rounds

The person who wins the round gets points by adding the cards that the remaining players have. Control the points of each round and keep playing until one person accumulates 500 points. That person is the winner of the game. To keep score for a hand, give the winner of the round:

  • 20 points for each Take 2, Return or Intermission card from the opponent's hand
  • 50 points for Color Change Wild Cards and Take 4
  • the value of the number cards (for example, a card number 8 equals 8 points)

Method 2 of 2: Try Simple Variations

Step 1. Play with double cards to make the game end faster

To make a quick game of UNO, have each player draw 2 matching cards instead of one, if they have them. This means that everyone will run out of cards more quickly.

  • For example, if there is a yellow 3 card on the table, a player can place a yellow 3 and a red 3.
  • If you don't want the game to end quickly, you can have players draw 2 cards instead of one each time they don't have a card to play.

Tip:

Since you will end up with more cards, consider making the winning score at least 1000 points instead of 500.

Step 2. Customize your own Wild cards

If you're playing a new deck of UNO cards, you'll probably see 3 Wild cards included for customization. To play these blank Wild cards, write your own rules that everyone agrees with. Then, they can play with it as they would with other Wild cards. For example, some customizable rules could be:

  • Everyone must draw 2 cards.
  • The next player must sing a song or draw a card.
  • Trade 1 card with the player after you.

Step 3. Trade whole hands with another player if you get the Trade Hands card

This is another new card that UNO now includes in the deck. Play the Swap Hands Wild card as if it were a regular Wild card, but decide which player you want to trade hands with.

For example, if you have this card, wait until the game is almost over and trade hands with the player with the fewest cards

Step 4. Play UNO online or on a game console

Don't worry if you can't find people to play UNO in person. You can easily search the internet to play UNO online. If you prefer, buy ONE to play on your computer or game console, such as PS4 or Xbox One.

You can even customize the rules for a completely unique UNO game
